Why Elope in the Lofoten Islands, Norway

The Lofoten Islands in Norway should be on the top of anyone’s list looking to elope in wild and rugged landscapes full of adventure. Imagine winding roads through fjords with the Arctic sea on one side and jagged mountains on the other. Eagles soaring above you, and orcas skirting the coastline. Viking history, incredible hikes, white sand beaches and red fishing villages.

Lamar and Sean knew they wanted to elope somewhere dramatic and remote, and when they saw our opening dates for Norway, they were all in!

The Land of the Midnight Sun

From mid-May to late July, Norway experiences a natural phenomenon where the sun remains visible for 24 hours a day. This is a dream for any photographer as there is a window of time throughout the night where the sun stays low on the horizon. This low light is what we search for on our elopement days as is often referred to as ‘golden hour’.

When we visited at the end of May, this hour stretched into many beautiful soft hours of light. This meant we were out hiking while most were sleeping, allowing us to have some of the more popular locations all to ourselves – making for a much more intimate experience.

Planning a Destination Elopement from Outside the Country

Planning a destination elopement from outside the country comes with it’s challenges. As photographers who have been shooting elopements around the world for almost 10 years, we know how to research locations for our clients to provide a seamless experience.

We worked very closely with Lamar and Sean to craft their multi-day adventure, helping them find a location that was central to amazing landscapes and scenes they wanted to explore. Leading up to the day we arrived a few days early to scout and put together a timeline that took advantage of the best weather for our time together.

Eloping in a Quaint Fishing Village on the Norwegian Sea

While researching locations in the Lofoten Islands, we came upon Nusfjord, located on the southern coast of Flakstadøya. Once a thriving hub for cod fishing, it features traditional red, yellow, and white rorbuer (fishermen’s cabins) set around a sheltered harbour. The village includes accommodation, restaurants and lots of fun activities as well as being a great base for exploring the greater area of Lofoten.

When we first arrived, it took our breath away. Lamar and Sean got ready in their cabin as the water lapped beneath us. The afternoon was slow and relaxed, making coffee and writing out their vows. They kept their wedding attire a surprise and shared a first look up on the rocky outcrops just beyond the village. Hiking Through Rocky Cliffs and Rugged Coastlines

The next few days were spent exploring all that the area has to offer. From stunning vantage points high above the ocean to isolated coves running with the sand between our toes. The cool arctic wind and never-ending light created some of the most dramatic images we have ever taken!

The Adventure of a Lifetime

If you are searching for a place to elope that is filled with endless wonder, epic views and quiet isolation, then the Lofoten Islands in Norway is somewhere you have to consider. We can’t wait to get back there to explore more of what this part of the world has to offer!
