Mariah & Cole

This Kananaskis Hiking Elopement was one of the most beautiful weddings we have ever had the chance to photograph. Mariah and Cole got in contact with us last year and told us they wanted to elope. Just the two of them somewhere remote and beautiful in the Rocky Mountains. This is our dream inquiry and we couldn’t wait to help them plan an amazing adventure!

Kananaskis Hiking Elopement

One of the first things we ask our couples is, are you guys willing to hike? This opens up so many opportunities to get somewhere a little more isolated with unique views. We decided on somewhere in Kananaskis as the options for hiking in the valley are limitless. It’s also away from the crowds of Banff and Canmore because it’s off the main Trans-Canada route. We decided to go on a little hike up to a ridge that would give us incredible views across a lake to neighbouring peaks. The ridge has a perfect natural aisle which we thought was made for a hiking elopement like this. Planning elopements in the Canadian Rockies is one of our favourite parts of our job. We love scouting out new places and finding the perfect locations for these special moments.

Weather in the Rocky Mountains

As we drove in from Canmore, the mountains were blanketed in thick, dark clouds. It looked a little scary as you don’t want to be anywhere exposed in the mountains in a storm, especially in a wedding dress! As we drove closer to the trailhead we found ourselves surrounded by blue sky. However, we knew wouldn’t last long as you could see the clouds coming towards us through the valley. We met up with Mariah and Cole and their officiant Twyla and got our hiking boots on ready to go. We had to make the most of the weather while we had it. Just as we hiked above the tree line we saw more clouds coming and it began to snow. Spring in the Rocky Mountains, sunny one minute and snowing the next.

The Adventure

As we reached our destination we found a sheltered spot out of the wind for Mariah to change into her dress. With Cole waiting out at the end of the viewpoint overlooking the lake, Mariah walked down the ridge to meet him. During their ceremony we watched the rain and clouds drift across the lake. The incredible views matched their amazing vows and we were all in awe of the landscape around us. After the ceremony, we hiked back down to the lakes. As the sun set through the low lying clouds we went out to take some more portraits. It was such an honour to have been a part of this beautiful day. It’s so wonderful to see a couple celebrating in a way that is meaningful to them. Thank you Mariah and Cole for letting us to be a part of this amazing Kananaskis Hiking Elopement!
